Organised by the ICOMOS Georgia and Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage (Riksantikvaren), under the auspicious of National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation Georgia, Practical Seminar – “Timber Conservation Principles and Practical Skills” has been conducted on 15-16th of July, 2021 within the ICOMOS Georgia pilot programme – “Sustainable Development of Heritage Site”.  The main aim of the Practical Seminar was to introduce main principles of conservation and development of practical skills for craftsmen as well as for the multidisciplinary group of experts engaged in the conservation field. The two-day workshop included sharing of the theoretical knowledge as well as practical works on ‘treatment’ and restoration of the structural and decorative elements of the timber architecture samples, conservation of the painted surfaces, etc.

Theoretical part was mostly based on the following themes: traditions of carpentry in Georgia, reasons for the timber architectural elements damage and existing problems, sharing timber restoration experiences, etc. On the second day of the Seminar, participants learnt and conducted such practical works as colour study, preparation of the wood surface for conservation works, restoration of the damaged timber architectural details, etc.

After the two workshop days, Participants were awarded with certificates. Workshop ended with an interesting discussion and hope for the future cooperation between ICOMOS Georgia and Seminar Participants.
